Judges’ Comments:

The garden was designed to suit the needs of their client and made what was a space that was becoming largely unused into a garden that would once again be loved, admired and used. The client’s reaction to the final result was superb and the build was executed proficiently.

GOLD

Project: Four Gables Designer: Hannah Sheffield Photographer: Roger Gladwell

This was a total overhaul of the clients rear terrace over looking the Mere in Thorpness. It is a beautiful area that needed to be in keeping with the surroundings. Access wasn’t the best and the levels had to be altered to ensure that the area was usable.

Judges’ Comments:

Great use of this large paving module on the path, complimented with clean cuts and transition from steps to patio area. Beautiful in its simplicity.

The rear garden was looking a little drab and the pool was leaking. The pool was filled, composite decking removed and a new contemporary terrace was created on which to sit a large aluminium canopy. The client wished to have a large seating area with as low maintenance paving as possible.

Judges’ Comments:

Judges Comment: Very well executed garden transformation. A raised area was constructed beyond a porcelain clad retaining wall, which included creation of new borders and pathway. The main terrace was extended to enable a large seated area. The hard landscape work in particular was delivered to a very high standard.

SILVER MERIT

Project: The Vegetable Plot Designer: Camilla Jousiffe Photographer: Graham Pusey

The client was a very keen grower and wanted to update
their vegetable garden. A new building was included in the rear corner with a full workshop and shed to the side. This building looks like it could have been built 40 years ago and slotted perfectly into the rear corner. The client also wanted a new wester red cedar glasshouse to be built alongside their new vegetable garden. This garden will be very well used from here on out.

Judges’ Comments:

A very interesting project that meant working closely with the client to create a modern kitchen garden. Gladwells provide new ergonomically designed raised beds, a new oak building for storage and office and red cedar glasshouse. The design was simple, the execution exquisite. The client very happy.

Judges’ Comments:

This keen veg grower had a very clear vision of what he required from his kitchen garden space. Gladwell’s delivered this but also combined it with garden buildings and an area for the couple to sit and witness the fruits of their labour. Fully engaged with the client from start to finish, this was very good project.

BRONZE

Roger Gladwell Landscape and Design

Project: Pound Hill House Designer: Hannah Sheffield Photographer: Graham Pusey

The client was having a house built by a local building company. The landscaping project consisted of existing land drains being re-instated to ensure the garden didn’t flood and drained correctly as it is in a bowl. Then new planting beds were marked out and the ground contoured. The lawns were laid with turf and the banks seeded with a matching seed mix. Finally the planting was final element to bring everything together.

Judges’ Comments:

A lot of attention paid to the drainage of this exposed site and ensuring the soil suitable for planting. The start of what will be a very comprehensive planting scheme in traditional island kidney shaped beds. Will be stunning in a few years time.
